Sue and Steve Weatherill and their new series of history craft books.

Nichola's Review from www.cbuk.info

As part of a cross-curricular and differential approach to history, craft projects can greatly enhance your pupils' understanding of a particular era and its people.

CURRICULUM: Craft in History

The Greek Activity Book and the Middle Ages Activity Book are part of the highly visual, easy to read Crafty Histories Series, which combine history with interesting and relevant craft ideas.

Aimed at the lower age range for Key Stage 2, the emphasis of these books is definitely on the fun aspects of the different historical eras and the limited amounts of text should make them appealing to even the most reluctant historian.

The crafts are a good mix of making, drawing and cookery which should appeal to both boys and girls. The activities use everyday items to make such delights as a Medusa's Head Shield (Greek), a fold-up castle (Middle Ages) and (my personal favourite) a pocket siege machine (Middle Ages).

Although a trip to the craft shop may be necessary to stock up on acrylic paints etc, the same materials tend to be used throughout the books, so they won't go to waste.  The instructions are clear, but some projects will require adult input.  Both books contain a page of stencils to be used when carrying out the activities, although they could do with being made a bit stronger if they are to survive the course.

Each book includes a map of the relevant era and a timeline, together with a glossary, but these are, essentially, craft books so the factual information is somewhat limited.  However, they are ideal back-ups for more comprehensive information books and will provide hours of fun and loads of good ideas to children doing school projects, or for teachers who wish to make their history lessons more fun.
